General information
Play and Learn is a project that aims to contribute to the comprehensive education of students in primary schools (6 to 12 years old) by using the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) model and the transdisciplinary nature of chess.

This innovative project is periodically renewed. At present, new contributions from neuroeducation are being incorporated, while the methodology of gamification and the use of hands-on workshops are being strengthened, with the aim of facilitating the implementation of educational chess in schools. In addition, computational thinking has been incorporated to enhance competency-based learning and to foster the development of cognitive and creative skills through a more metacognitive approach.

In other words, it uses the same didactic approach as the current Creative Pre-Chess project, which is already fully available for implementation in early childhood education.

Therefore, three teacher’s books are offered, one for each cycle of primary education, with all the activities for each of the units in each year. Likewise, the six books in the Play and Learn collection —student material for self-assessment and portfolio work— are being restructured and expanded in order to include more exercises and challenges corresponding to the new types of activities designed for this new Play and Learn project.

All the resources needed to carry out the students’ multilevel activities can be found in the complementary materials: Chess Stories (comics), Tocada Movida (songs), Active Mind (dossiers on cognitive skills), workshop sheets (downloadable PDFs) and Research (dossiers on metacognitive learning in chess).

Optionally, other contents may be worked on more specifically using the resources presented in the books from the Educational Chess and Chess Educational Resources collections, as well as the Feel and Apply materials.

Teacher books

There is a book for teachers in each of the three cycles of the primary stage.

Each book is structured in three blocks. In the first, the theoretical part on which the project is based in the cycle is exposed. In the second, the objectives, the contents, the structure of the units, the typologies of the activities, the evaluative resources… And, in the third, all the activities for each of the units of the two years of the corresponding cycle are presented.

Sent and Apply Dossiers

The initial proposal, conceived with a transversal chess approach, included the following eleven themes.

Emotional education Entrepreneurship
Education in values Communication
Creativity Common welfare economy
Existential intelligence Culture of peace
Promoting happiness Ecology and sustainability
Health education

Each of these themes was structured into 48 dossiers, one for each month of the school year (from October to May) throughout the entire primary education stage. At the end of this subsection, two representative examples of these dossiers are shown.

In the new Play and Learn project, with a transdisciplinary approach and making use of generative artificial intelligence technologies, all this material is reorganized: themes are grouped, the number of materials is reduced, titles are updated, and new audiovisual formats are offered, with the aim of creating more innovative and accessible educational narratives.
